Advancing neurodevelopmental research training in Canada: The evolution of CanNRT

Stephen Scherer discuss what makes CanNRT unique

CanNRT expands its national reach, empowering early-career researchers to advance neurodevelopmental research and improve outcomes for individuals across Canada.

In 2022, the Quebec Autism Research Training (QART) program transitioned into the Canadian Neurodevelopmental Research Training (CanNRT) platform. This shift, supported by a $4.8 million donation from the Azrieli Foundation, expanded the program’s focus from autism research to include all neurodevelopmental conditions, creating a national training platform for early-career researchers across Canada.

The inaugural CanNRT Fellowship cohort, admitted in the summer of 2022, comprised 16 fellows from across Canada, joined by fellows from the 2021 and 2020 QART program. This transition enabled the continuation of mentorship and collaboration, broadening the platform’s impact beyond Quebec.

CanNRT’s expansion has already strengthened the network of researchers, mentors, peers. This collaborative environment ensures trainees gain practical research experience and are well-equipped to contribute to the growing field of neurodevelopmental science.

Looking ahead, CanNRT will continue to foster equity and innovation, supporting researchers who are working to improve the lives of individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions.
